EU en China ook na stap Trump nog steeds achter klimaatakkoord

29 maart 2017 – De EU en China bevestigen het nog maar eens: ze staan nog steeds achter de klimaatafspraken van Parijs. Dat stellen de landen tijdens een ontmoeting op woensdag. Ze reageren op de Amerikaanse president Trump, die met een decreet het klimaatbeleid van Obama terug wil draaien.

‘(…) “We regret the US is rolling back the main pillar of its climate policy, the clean power plan,” said EU commissioner for climate action, Miguel Arias Canete. “Now, it remains to be seen by which other means the United States intends to meet its commitments under the Paris agreement.” (…)
“Others may roll back, but the EU and China will forge ahead with the Paris agreement and the clean energy transition,” said climate commissioner Canete. (…)’

De EU-commissaris voor klimaatactie en energie, Miguel Arias Cañete, reageert op het decreet van Trump dat het Clean Power Plan van diens voorganger Obama moet terugdraaien. Cañete is vanaf vandaag tot 2 april in China om te overleggen over de maatregelen tegen klimaatverandering. China en de EU willen de leiding nemen in de uitvoering van het klimaatakkoord van Parijs. Eerder speelden de Verenigde Staten nog een grote rol, maar onder president Trump is die leidende rol uitgespeeld.

‘(…) Commissioner Arias Cañete’s mission to China comes at a critical time in international climate policy, allowing the EU and China to show joint leadership and explore how they can reinforce their strong commitment to the 2015 Paris Agreement ahead of the EU-China summit to be held in June. The implementation of the EU-China energy roadmap agreed by Commissioner Arias Cañete in June 2016, clean energy cooperation, low-emission mobility, and emissions trading will be discussed during the Commissioner’s visit, based on the long-standing cooperation of the two sides on the topics. Meetings with European energy companies, the EU’s Chamber of Commerce in China, NGOs and think-tanks will complete the four-day mission.
‘The EU and China are joining forces to forge ahead on the implementation of the Paris Agreement and accelerate the global transition to clean energy. Our successful cooperation on issues like emissions trading and clean technologies are bearing fruit.
