Obama wil oliebelasting voor groen transportsysteem

5 februari 2016 – President Obama van de Verenigde Staten wil 10 dollar belasting per olievat heffen, zeggen bronnen tegen Politico. Met het geld wil hij een schoon transportsysteem voor de 21ste eeuw financieren. 

Obama zal volgende week een voorstel doen om de komende tien jaar 300 miljard dollar te investeren in een transportsysteem met zo min mogelijk file en CO2-uitstoot.

‘(…) To pay for it all, Obama will call for a $10 “fee” on every barrel of oil, a surcharge that would be paid by oil companies but would presumably be passed along to consumers. (…)’

Het is niet erg waarschijnlijk dat het Congres, met een Republikeinse meerderheid, akkoord gaat met Obama’s plan. En zelfs zijn partijgenoot Hillary Clinton staat waarschijnlijk niet te springen, stelt Politico.

‘(…) The fee could add as much as 25 cents a gallon to the cost of gasoline, and even with petroleum prices at historic lows, the proposal could be particularly awkward for Hillary Clinton, who has embraced most of Obama’s policies but has also vowed to oppose any tax hikes on families earning less than $250,000 a year. (…)’
