‘Aardbevingen Texas waarschijnlijk door ‘fracking”
10 mei 2015 – Fracking is waarschijnlijk de oorzaak van de serie lichte aardbevingen in Texas. Dat schrijft een onderzoeksteam van de Southern Methodist University in een rapport.
Bij het winnen van schaliegas en -olie, wordt de bodem ‘gekraakt’ door onder hoge druk water, zand en chemicaliën in de bodem te injecteren. ‘Fracking’ is er waarschijnlijk de reden van dat Texas sinds 2008 een hele serie relatief lichte aardbevingen heeft gehad. Er waren zeker 130 in het noorden van Texas sinds 2008, meldt CNN.

‘(…) An SMU-led seismology team finds that high volumes of wastewater injection combined with saltwater (brine) extraction from natural gas wells is the most likely cause of earthquakes occurring near Azle, Texas, from late 2013 through spring 2014. (…)’
Sluitend bewijs is er nog niet. De onderzoekers gaan de seismiek in de omgeving de komende tijd uitgebreid onderzoeken. Ook George Choy, een onderzoeker van de United States Geological Service, sluit niet uit dat fracking de oorzaak is van de bevingen. Maar, zo zegt hij tegen CNN, “There just isn’t enough evidence to support the claim yet in this case”.

‘(…)It is Possible, but Improbable That the Azle Earthquakes are Natural
- During the past 150 years of settlement, there had been no felt earthquakes in the Azle/Reno area prior to November, 2013.
- There is no clear evidence for fault surface expressions indicative of large- scale active faulting in the region.
- Publicly available regional seismic data, though limited, show no significant fault offsets in sediment deposited more than ~300 million years ago.
- The seismicity pattern in Azle is not consistent with the typical foreshock- main-shock-aftershock sequence observed in classic (tectonic) earthquake sequences, but is consistent with earthquake swarm patterns often associated with induced seismicity. (…)’
