BP in verweer tegen beschuldiging van manipulatie gasmarkt
18 augustus 2015 – Een interne rechter van de Amerikaanse Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (Ferc) stelt dat BP in 2008, na orkaan Ike, de gasmarkt manipuleerde. BP vecht de zaak aan.
In september 2008 verwoestte de orkaan Ike de installaties voor olie- en gasproductie voor de kust van Texas.

Sharp moves in wholesale natural gas prices after the hurricane had pushed up the value of BP’s trading positions. ‘(…) FERC claims that the Texas team traders “uneconomically” utilized BP’s transportation capacity between Katy and HSC, made “repeated early uneconomic sales” at HSC and “took steps to increase BP’s market concentration at HSC as part of a manipulative scheme.”
Those actions allegedly allowed the Texas team to suppress the HSC Gas Daily index with the goal of boosting the value of BP’s financial position at HSC from September 2008 through November 2008, FERC said. (…)’
De manipulatie leverde BP relatief weinig extra winst op, en ook de boete is betaalbaar. Bij een soortgelijke zaak betaalde BP gewoon, schrijft de Financial Times. Deze keer ontkent BP en gaat het bedrijf de strijd aan.

“We strongly disagree with today’s decision by the FERC Administrative Law Judge. The evidence overwhelmingly demonstrated that BP’s natural gas traders did not engage in any market manipulation.”
Een commissie van vijf FERC-leden gaat de zaak bekijken om tot een definitief oordeel te komen.
