Canada verliest kwart van alle banen in de oliesector door lage olieprijs

19 mei 2015 – Door de aanhoudend lage olieprijs, worden in Canada veel olieprojecten gestopt of uitgesteld. Dat gaat 185 duizend banen kosten en Canada loopt 31 miljard dollar aan investeringen mis.

Grote oliebedrijven stellen hun projecten in de Canadese teerzanden uit nu de olieprijs laag is. De winning van deze olie is relatief duur. Er zijn al negen grote projecten uitgesteld, zo meldt Trouw.

Petroleum Labour Market Information (PetroLMI), een onderdeel van de Canadese veiligheidsorganisatie van de olie- en gasindustrie Enform, berekende dat door de lage olieprijs veel minder zal worden geïnvesteerd in olie en gas in Canada.

‘(…) In 2014, the oil and gas industry spent more than $125 billion on exploration, development and production activities in Canada, supporting more than 720,000 direct and indirect jobs. With an anticipated $31 billion reduction in capital and operational expenditures in 2015, the Canadian economy could lose as many as 185,000 direct and indirect jobs related to the oil and gas industry, a 25 per cent decline from 2014, if spending patterns were to remain the same when compared with previous years. Vooral Alberta wordt naar verwachting hard getroffen.
