COP21 – ‘Vergeet de gezondheidseffecten niet’

3 november 2015 – In een ingezonden brief in het medisch vakblad The Lancet wordt de onderhandelaars van COP21 gevraagd toch vooral de gezondheidseffecten van de klimaatafspraken niet te vergeten.

De briefschrijver, Anthony Robbins, wijst (onder verwijzing naar de economische opvattingen over rijkdom van Thomas Piketty) erop dat de klimaatafspraken grote gevolgen zullen hebben voor de verdeling van de rijkdom en daarmee voor de ‘verdeling’ van gezondheid.

‘(…) Actions prescribed in Paris to alter how energy is generated and distributed worldwide will surely, if Piketty is right, cause changes in human activity that are large enough to drive income and wealth inequalities. Each policy and investment to ameliorate climate change deserves to be examined to learn how much wealth redistribution it will cause. How much will the intervention affect the health of populations? Indirect effects caused by actions to cope with climate change are not yet under discussion. No numbers are currently available to quantify the indirect effects. Can we design an approach for the parties to UNFCCC to predict the indirect health effects of climate change interventions? (…) Can those concerned about resulting health disparities create a countervailing force? (…)’
