Eni vindt enorm gasveld voor Egyptische kust
1 september 2015 – Het Italiaanse energiebedrijf Eni heeft voor de kust van Egypte een enorm gasveld ontdekt, zo maakt het bedrijf bekend. Het grootste gasveld in de Middellandse zee, met genoeg gas om Egypte decennia in haar behoefte te voorzien.
Met naar verwachting 850 miljard kubieke meter gas (hoeveelheid energie is equivalent aan 5,5 miljard vaten olie) in een veld van ongeveer 100 vierkante kilometer, is het gasveld het grootste ooit ontdekt in Egypte en in de Middellandse zee. Het is ook een van de grootste gasvelden ter wereld, zo stelt Eni. Ter vergelijking, dat is ongeveer eenderde van het Groninger gasveld.
Eni-topman Claudio Descalzi is onlangs naar Caïro afgereisd om met Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi, de president van Egypte, te spreken over de vondst, laat Eni weten in het persbericht. De verwachte hoeveelheid gas in het Shorouk exploratiegebied is 45 procent van de totale gasreserve van Egypte en is van groot belang voor de Egyptische energievoorziening en economie. Bovendien kan het Europa helpen minder afhankelijk te worden van Russisch gas, zo stelt de Financial Times.

Eni start begin 2016 met boren, aldus Descalzi in de Wall Street Journal. Wanneer de productie start, wil hij nog niet zeggen, maar de krant schat in dat dat een jaar later zal zijn. Eni heeft een aandeel van 50 procent in de productie.
