EU-landen moeten na Brexit meer doen tegen CO2-uitstoot

18 juli 2016 – Na het vertrek van het Verenigd Koninkrijk uit de EU zullen de 27 andere EU-landen hun CO2-reductie-inpanningen moeten opvoeren om als EU het doel van ‘Parijs’ te kunnen halen.

Deze week zal Brussel opgeven wat de emissiedoelstellingen van de EU-staten zijn. In dat overzicht zal het Verenigd Koninkrijk nog gewoon meedoen. Maar zodra het Brexit in werking is gezet, zal het VK niet meer meegeteld worden. En dat zal dan betekenen dat de inspanningen van de andere EU-staten met 0,2 tot 1,7% omhoog moeten, want de grote economie van het VK is verhoudingsgewijs al behoorlijk vergroend.
Dit blijkt uit een studie die het Climate Action Network (CAN) Europe heeft laten verrichten.
De EU als geheel heeft getekend voor een reductie van 40% per 2030.

Wendell Trio, CAN Europe’s director, said that Brexit could be a spur to other EU countries taking on greater climate commitments. “It doesn’t necessarily have to be something bad,” he said. “It just means the other countries will need to compensate for the changes that might be brought about by the UK leaving.” (…)
Bill Hare, a former Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) led author and the founder of the Climate Analytics consultancy: “The costs could run to several billions in gross terms, although the net costs would probably be lower. (…) If the UK completely separates from EU climate policies in every sense, there will be consequences. But if the EU and UK remain entangled in a constructive way, going forward with policies like the emissions trading system, then the differences may not be so extreme.”
The first review of climate commitments made under the Paris agreement will come in 2018, and this is already being viewed as an opportunity for a redistribution of Britain’s contribution to Europe’s plans. (…)’
