‘ExxonMobil misleidt publiek over risico’s klimaatverandering’

4 november 2015 – ExxonMobil wist al in de jaren zeventig over de risico’s van klimaatverandering en misleidde het publiek. Daarom moet de Amerikaanse staat een strafrechtelijk onderzoek beginnen, aldus bijna vijftig organisaties en Hillary Clinton.

Bijna vijftig milieu-organisaties en mensenrechtengroeperingen roepen het Amerikaanse Ministerie van Justitie op om strafrechtelijk onderzoek te doen naar ExxonMobil. Het olieconcern wist al sinds de jaren zeventig van klimaatverandering en misleidde het publiek, stellen de opstellers van een brief aan procureur-generaal Loretta Lynch.

‘(…) “Despite Exxon’s wealth and power, people were eager to sign on to this statement,” said Bill McKibben, co-founder of 350.org. “Anyone who’s lived through 25 years of phony climate debate, or who’s seen the toll climate change is already taking on the most vulnerable communities, has been seething at these revelations. It reminds me of the spirit at the start of the Keystone battle.”
The letter is a remarkable show of unity, with groups ranging from the Audubon Society to the Foundation of Women in Hip Hop, and will help keep the spotlight on Exxon as new revelations continue to emerge. (…)’

Aanleiding voor de oproep om ExxonMobil aan een onderzoek te onderwerpen, is een artikel van Inside Climate News over wetenschappelijk onderzoek van ExxonMobil over klimaatverandering. ExxonMobil doet al sinds de late jaren 70 onderzoek naar klimaatverandering, onder meer in samenwerking met Columbia University en MIT.

‘(…) Reeds in juli 1977 wees het eigen onderzoeksdepartement van Esso (het latere Exxon) op een aantoonbaar verband tussen de toename van CO2 in de atmosfeer en de opwarming van de aarde. Men kwam tot de conclusie dat een verdubbeling van broeikasgassen in de atmosfeer zou leiden tot een wereldwijde opwarming van twee tot drie graden. De eigen wetenschappers van Exxon waarschuwden de bedrijfsleiding dat binnen een termijn van tien jaar het roer drastisch moest omgegooid worden. (…)’

ExxonMobil reageert vanaf eind jaren tachtig door fors te investeren in allerlei vormen van ontkenning van klimaatverandering, aldus De Wereld Morgen.

Deze misleiding is reden voor een rechtzaak, vinden de organisaties die vrijdag een brief schreven. Eerder waarschuwden Abyd Karmali van de Bank of America en Mark Carney van de Bank of England de grote olieconcerns al dat ze grote rechtzaken tegemoet kunnen zien, zoals tegen de tabaks- en asbestindustrie. De tabaksindustrie heeft na dergelijke rechtzaken tientallen miljarden dollars moeten betalen, aldus de New York Times. Een woordvoerder van ExxonMobil laat in die krant weten: ‘There is a definite risk from climate change. We have an unbroken record of participation in significant and serious scientific inquiry into this problem.’

Het Ministerie van Justitie reageerde nog niet op de brief.

‘(…) Dear Attorney General Lynch,

As leaders of some of the nation’s environmental, indigenous peoples and civil rights groups, we’re writing to ask that you initiate a federal probe into the conduct of ExxonMobil. New revelations in the Los Angeles Times and the Pulitzer-prize-winning InsideClimate News strongly suggest that the corporation knew about the dangers of climate change even as it funded efforts at climate denial and systematically misled the public.

Given the damage that has already occurred from climate change—particularly in the poorest communities of our nation and our planet—and that will certainly occur going forward, these revelations should be viewed with the utmost apprehension. They are reminiscent—though potentially much greater in scale—than similar revelations about the tobacco industry.

These journalists have provided a remarkable roadmap to this corporation’s potential misconduct. We would ask that you follow that map wherever it may lead, employing all the tools at your disposal to uncover the truth.
