‘(…) The Global e-Sustainability Initiative (GeSI) and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) announced a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). Through the MoU, the two organizations will work together with a first focus on COP21, building momentum for the transition to a low carbon economy.
GeSI is a partnership organization representing over 30 of the world’s most influential Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) companies, each committed to making advancements that foster sustainable development.

Peter Bakker, President and CEO of WBCSD stated: “We have an exciting opportunity to make a positive impact through this partnership. Working with GeSI, we aim to uncover new avenues for collaborating with the ICT sector on sustainable development. An ICT-enabled world will be critical on the road to sustainability – and coupled with LCTPi, the momentum for the low carbon economy is undeniable.”
The ICT sector’s capacity for driving low carbon solutions is impressive. GeSI’s #SMARTer2030 report outlines the economic, social and environmental benefits of an ICT-enabled world, underscoring that ICT solutions will be key for sustainable development – decoupling carbon emissions from economic growth.

The Low Carbon Technology Partnerships Initiative (LCTPi), a joint initiative with the IEASDSN and led by WBCSD, works toward similar goals and recognizes that the transition to a low carbon economy is business’s biggest opportunity for the foreseeable future. Over 140 companies are using LCTPi as a platform to develop implementation plans that scale low carbon solutions – from climate smart agriculture, to renewable energy, energy-efficient buildings and low carbon freight.

The new partnership between GeSI and WBCSD adds to this call for low carbon solutions – demonstrating that the proper technology exists, and that the next step is to implement it through a call to action at COP21

Luis Neves, Board Chairman at GeSI stated, “As the largest ICT business associations for sustainability, we are committed to using our technology to create a more sustainable world. The ICT sector is a central pillar for addressing climate change. We have solutions, and we’re ready to implement. We look forward to seeing what our two organizations can accomplish together on the road to a low carbon economy.” (…)’
