Invitation to an online press briefing ahead of the extraordinary Environment Council 30 September

The Environment Council meet this Friday 30 September at an Extraordinary Council meeting, to agree on the ratification of the Paris Agreement. The Agreement will enter into force on the 30th day after 55 countries representing 55% of global emissions have ratified it. With 61 countries representing 47.79% of global emissions having already ratified, it is likely that the Agreement will enter into force this year. Normally, all 28 member states would have to ratify the Agreement before the EU can deposit its instrument of ratification. With the pressure of other countries moving fast on ratification, the EU has decided on an extraordinary process, which would allow the Council, after the consent of the European Parliament, to join the deal in October without all member states having ratified it. You will hear from Wendel Trio, Director at Climate Action Network (CAN) Europe about implications of the EU’s ratification process. The briefing will bring clarity around the likely outcomes of the Extraordinary Council, including the position of member states. It will also highlight key remaining issues for the EU in implementing the Paris Agreement, and what the EU must do to avoid lagging behind in working towards meeting the objectives of the Paris Agreement. You can join the briefing online at https://global.gotomeeting.com/join/281663229, with a possibility to ask questions directly or through a chat box. ….
