Milieugroepen: ‘Bouw kolencentrales in 2016 met tweederde afgenomen’
23 maart 2017 – De bouw van kolencentrales nam in 2016 met 62 procent af, aldus milieugroepen Greenpeace, de Sierra Club en CoalSwarm in een rapport. Zij putten hoop voor het klimaat uit de ‘vrije val’ in kolenenergie.
In hun rapport Boom and Bust 2017: Tracking The Global Coal Plant Pipeline onderzoeken Greenpeace, de Sierra Club en CoalSwarm voor het derde jaar op rij de wereldwijde ontwikkeling van nieuwe kolencentrales.

‘(…) The report’s findings include a 62 percent drop in new coal plant construction starts globally, a 48 percent reduction in worldwide pre-construction activity, and an 85 percent decline in new Chinese coal plant permits. (…)’
De organisaties wijten de terugval in kolen vooral aan ander beleid in Azië, vooral in China en India. In die landen zijn nu meer dan honderd projecten in de koelkast gezet. Ook gingen – vooral in de EU en de Verenigde Staten – de afgelopen twee jaar veel kolencentrales ‘met pensioen’, aldus het rapport.
De opstellers van het rapport stellen dat, gezien de sluiting van kolencentrales en de vertraging in de bouw van nieuwe kolencentrales, de doelen van het Parijse klimaatakkoord ‘within feasible reach’ komen.
