Minister: ‘Australië kan uitstoot reduceren door te investeren in kolen’
19 januari 2016 – Australië kan zijn in Parijs beloofde CO2-reductie halen, door te investeren in ‘schone steenkooltechnologie’. Dat is de conclusie van een onderzoek in opdracht van het Australische ministerie van Industrie, Innovatie en Wetenschap.
Door oude kolencentrales te vervangen door nieuwe, met schonere technologieën, kan de Australische CO2-uitstoot met 27 tot 34 procent verminderd worden, aldus The Australian op basis van de studie. Australië beloofde in het klimaatakkoord van Parijs de emissie in 2030 te verminderen met 28 procent. Minister Matt Canavan (Federal Resources) staat achter de resultaten van de studie en laat weten kolen te zien als een goede bron voor een betaalbare en betrouwbare energievoorziening.

‘(…) “I don’t think there has been sufficient emphasis on the technological developments occurring in coal and gas-fired power,’’ [Federal Resources Minister Matt Canavan] told The Australian. “People who oppose the coal industry for ideological reasons are incorrectly claiming its days are numbered. Some of the world’s most advanced power stations use coal, and even more significantly, hi-tech coal-fired power stations can be an important tool to lower emissions.
It would be foolish to turn a blind eye to ultra-supercritical technologies, especially given they’re being used by other nations in our region — including the very nations that buy our coal.’’ (…)
Ook premier Malcolm Turnbull liet in de Australian weten achter het idee te staan. Hij gelooft dat kolen nog lange tijd een belangrijke plaats inneemt in de energiemix en dat andere bronnen, zoals wind en zon, de stroomprijs te veel opdrijven.
Maar energie-analisten en economen hebben kritiek, aldus International Business Time. Analist Olivia Kember waarschuwt ervoor dat Australië zijn langetermijn-beloftes in Parijs, namelijk nul emissie na 2050, niet waar kan maken als het nu in kolen investeert. Ook de vooraanstaande Australische wetenschapper Alan Finkel ziet niets in het plan om te investeren in een nieuwe generatie kolencentrales.

Over de schonere kolentechnologie
Door onder hogere temperaturen en druk kolen te verbranden, wordt de emissie lager. De technologie wordt al toegepast in China, India, Japan, Korea en de Verenigde Staten en ook in vier kolencentrales in Australië, aldus the Australian.
