Paving the way to more renewable energy – New EU code approved!

On 11 September, member states approved a new set of pan-European rules for their electricity systems. The Network Code on High Voltage Direct Current Connections (HVDC) will maximize the benefits for Europe and customers, linking offshore wind farms to consumption areas or consumption areas with each other. HVDC is the third Network Code and Guideline to be approved in comitology.
Few countries have HVDC grid codes and most are setting connection requirements on a project basis. The approval of the HVDC network code is particularly timely as it harmonises the development of the HVDC technology used to build interconnectors (e.g. Ireland-Great Britain, across the North Sea or the Mediterranean), to connect offshore wind farms to the grid, and also for long distance onshore connections (e.g. within Germany North-South).….
