Shell stapt uit ‘Climate and Clean Air Coalition’
25 februari 2016 – Shell stapt uit de ‘Climate and Clean Air Coalition’ (CCAC). Of beter gezegd: Shell heeft het lidmaatschap van de nieuwe dochter BG Group opgezegd. Shell wilde zelf al geen lid worden. De BG Group was nota bene een van de mede-oprichters.
Het FD meldt deze opmerkelijke actie van Shell. De ‘Climate and Clean Air Coalition’ richt zich o.a. op het terugdringen van methaanuitstoot en is een initiatief van de Verenigde Naties, overheden, bedrijven en ngo’s.
Uit het bericht van het FD
‘(…) De afmelding van BG door Shell is pikant. In augustus vorig jaar ondertekende minister Bert Koenders van Buitenlandse Zaken in het bijzijn van de Amerikaanse president Barack Obama nog een verklaring waarin hij olie- en gasbedrijven in Nederland, en in het bijzonder Shell, oproept lid te worden van CCAC. Maar die oproep was in Nederland tot nu toe aan dovemansoren gericht. Niet alleen Shell, maar ook de NAM en de Gasunie hebben zich niet bij deze coalitie aangesloten. Een woordvoerder van het ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken wilde niet reageren. (…)’
Shell is wel actief in het terugdringen van methaanemissies, maar ziet geen meerwaarde in een CCAC-lidmaatschap. Bedrijven als Total, ENI, Statoil en BP zijn wel lid.
Over CCAC
Binnen CCAC is een sectie ‘Oil & Gas Initiative’ actief.
CCAC:
‘(…) The CCAC’s Oil & Gas Initiative is aimed at reducing emissions of short-lived climate pollutants from oil & gas industry operations, with a focus on methane and black carbon. Methane is a greenhouse gas at least 84 times more potent than CO2 over a 20-year time horizon, while black carbon emissions from oil & gas operations are thought to contribute to accelerated warming of the polar ice caps, among other negative consequences. This Initiative currently has two components: The Oil & Gas Methane Partnership, and a project to develop and demonstrate new technology to reduce black carbon from gas flares. Other components may be added by the CCAC partners over time. (…)’
Nederland is ook lid van het CCAC.
Op de lijst van ‘private sector actors’ die lid zijn staat de BG Group al niet meer genoemd. Overigens staat op die lijst wel de ‘Shell Foundation’.
