COP21 – ‘2440 geplande kolencentrales bedreigen klimaatdoel’
3 december 2015 – Wereldwijd zijn nog plannen voor de bouw van 2440 kolencentrales. Als deze centrales werkelijk gebouwd worden, is de CO2-uitstoot van kolenenergie in 2030 400 procent hoger dan mag om onder 2 graden opwarming te blijven.
Zelfs als geen van de kolencentrales wordt gebouwd, is de uitstoot van energie uit kolen nog 150 procent hoger dan de waarde voor het 2-gradenpad.
Dat stelt Climate Action Tracker (CAT) op de klimaattop in Paris. CAT is een onafhankelijk samenwerkingsverband van vier onderzoeksorganisaties: het Nederlandse Ecofys, NewClimate Institute, Climate Analytics en Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research.
CAT berekende de mondiale uitstoot door kolencentrales en vergeleek deze met de uitstootlimieten die zijn gesteld om onder de 2 en onder de 1,5 graden opwarming te blijven.

‘(…) There are 2440 planned coal plants around the world (2), totalling 1428GW, which could emit approximately 16-18 percent of the total allowed emissions in 2030 (under a 2°C-compatible scenario, medium range). Including existing capacity with a technical lifetime beyond 2030, total emissions from coal-fired power generation could reach 12 GtCO2 in 2030. (…)’
CAT analyseerde de acht ‘landen’, waaronder China, India en de EU, met meer dan 5 GW aan kolencentrales in de planning.
