‘Opwarming aarde zet toch door’

5 juni 2015- Op de voorpagina meldt de NRC vanavond dat de opwarming van de aarde toch doorzet. De krant bericht over een publicatie in Science.

Science Magazine schrijft er over onder de kop ‘Much-touted global warming pause never happened’. Science Magazine is erg kritisch over het VN-klimaatpanel IPCC: ‘In 2013, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) flagged an odd phenomenon: Atmospheric temperature data collected over the past few decades suggested that global warming had slowed down beginning around 1998. (…) When better corrections for various sources of bias are applied to the data (…) the so-called global warming hiatus vanishes—and in fact, they argue, global warming may have sped up.’
De NRC concludeert dat de onderzoekers aantonen ‘dat de opwarming in hetzelfde tempo is doorgegaan als in de afgelopen dertig tot zestig jaar.’ ‘Onder wetenschappers lokte deze zogenaamde warming hiatus een fel debat uit: waar is de warmte dan gebleven? Maar nu schrijven negen klimaatwetenschappers dat de uitspraak van het IPCC “niet langer valide” is.’
‘Global temperatures might have been even warmer than we’re reporting had some of these other factors not come into play,’ zegt een van de onderzoekers in Science Magazine. ‘And once these things play out, we may find we’re warming at an even more rapid rate than we saw at the end of the last century.’
