‘Wist Shell al meer dan dertig jaar van de klimaatverandering?’
22 februari 2016 – Drie Amerikaanse congresleden hebben Justitie om een onderzoek gevraagd naar Shell. Wist Shell al meer dan dertig jaar van de klimaatverandering?
Vorig jaar is al een dergelijk onderzoek gestart naar ExxonMobil.

‘(…) Vorig jaar werden soortgelijke oproepen om onderzoek naar de invloed van ExxonMobil op klimaatbeleid gedaan. Openbaar aanklagers in Californië en New York zijn daadwerkelijk onderzoeken gestart, waarbij de vraag is of burgers en /of beleggers misleidt zijn over klimaatverandering en de financiële risico’s.
De oproep om soortgelijk onderzoek naar Shell te starten volgt na publicaties van InsideClimate News, waaruit blijkt dat ook andere olie- en gasbedrijven al in de jaren zeventig bekend waren met de gevolgen van klimaatverandering. Ondanks het wetenschappelijke bewijs financierde Exxon en Shell lobbygroepen die bewust twijfel zaaiden, zoals het American Petroleum Institute. (..)’

‘(…) “As members of the Oversight Committee, we now ask that Shell also be investigated for intentionally hiding the truth about climate change and embarking on a massive campaign of denial and disinformation,” the letter states.
Shell spokesman Curtis Smith responded to the letter by saying that “Shell’s public position on climate change and the challenge CO2 poses is well known and can be documented for over a decade through publications such as the Shell Annual Report and the Shell Sustainability Report. Recognizing the climate challenge and the role energy has in enabling a decent quality of life, we continue to pursue and advance constructive dialogue on this topic as the challenge is one for all of society.” (…)’
