Reacties op start boringen Shell in poolgebied

18 augustus 2015 – Shell kreeg maandag definitief toestemming om te boren voor de kust van Alaska. De reacties van onder meer milieuorganisaties en concurrenten op een rij.

Greenpeace
‘(…) Nu heeft Shell zijn pijlen gericht op de Noordpool. De kans op een olieramp bij oliewinning is in dit gebied 75 procent. De troep opruimen is door de barre omstandigheden vrijwel onmogelijk. En we hebben geen Noordpoololie nodig. Om de opwarming van de aarde te stoppen, moet deze voorraad juist in de grond blijven. (…)’ (1)

“Vandaag laat Shell zien dat het lak heeft aan de Noordpool. Ondanks de protesten van miljoenen mensen en talloze wetenschappers start Shell weer met de onverantwoorde boringen in het kwetsbare gebied.” (2)

“They’ve had drill ships run aground, an oil containment dam crushed like a beer can, a towline snapped… Nothing of what they have done over the past couple of years would give you any kind of guarantee that they could drill safely for oil in the Arctic.” (3)

Friends of the Earth
‘(…) Marissa Knodel of Friends of the Earth said the award of the permit “completely contradicts” President Barack Obama’s commitment to tackle the threat of climate change, made this month when he set out plans to curb greenhouse gas emissions from power plants. She said Mr Obama was “willing to allow the pristine Chukchi Sea to become an energy sacrifice zone and worsen climate disruption”. ‘The permit award goes against science, the will of the people, and common sense. This fight is far from over.’ (4)

Louwrens Hacquebord
Hacquebord, emeritus hoogleraar Arctische en Antarctische studies aan de Rijksuniversiteit Groningen, beschrijft grote risico’s voor het milieu, maar stelt vast dat Shell de oliereserves hard nodig heeft.
‘(…) Dus kiest Shell ervoor nieuwe velden in een moeilijk maar politiek stabiel gebied als Alaska te openen. Met alle risico’s van dien voor het milieu van het poolgebied – en de beleggers. (…)’ (5)

Allianz Global Investors
‘(…) “The biggest thing that could go wrong is Shell not finding enough oil. Gas up there is worthless because it is so far from the end market and because of shale in the US,” said Chris Wheaton, energy fund manager of Allianz Global Investors – a significant Shell shareholder. (…)'(6)

BP
Nick Butler, voormalig strateeg bij BP over een mogelijke grote olievondst van Shell, bijvoorbeeld 30 miljard vaten olie in het hele gebied bij Alaska.  
“It would start a gold rush to the Arctic because people would believe there would be other comparable fields.”  (6)

Als de vondst kleiner is:
‘(…) “If it is less than this, say 10bn barrels which is still big, the issue is the cost of production. I think that would be very high – certainly over $100 per barrel. That means production would only be profitable if world prices were significantly higher than that on a permanent basis.” (6)

John Browne, oud-topman van BP, nu L1, noemde de Shell-staf techno-optimisten.
‘(…) “I’m not chairman of Shell. But I think [Arctic drilling] is very expensive and I would always go for hydrocarbons which have less cost and effort involved. (…) I’ve never been a great supporter of right-on-the-margin development, partly because of the cost. So I think you’ve got to be careful what you do and cost includes your long-term reputation.” (3)

Shell
Shell-baas Ben van Beurden benadrukt herhaaldelijk dat de oliewinning in het gebied geen ‘rocket science’ is. Maar laat aan de BBC toch zijn twijfels zien.
‘(…) “The drilling in the Arctic comes with an increased risk profile and that is because the environment is much more fragile than other environments. It is also much more unforgiving in terms of climate, weather, etc. It is also, by the way, the particular reservoir that we are going to explore in, one that is – from a technical perspective – relatively easy. So you have to make a judgement: ‘Can I do this in a responsible way?’. That is a bit of personal journey that I had to go through as well and many others associated with the project – we believe that we can responsibly explore for hydrocarbons in Alaska. Whether that means that we can develop this in a way that makes commercial sense remains to be seen.” (3)
